What do Middle School  and High School Group Mentors do?
Our group mentors work with a core group of 3-4 students in a classroom setting and group outings with other mentors and mentees.  Meetings are held from 3:30-5:00p.m. and are scheduled in advance. Innovative curriculum incorporates: Gallup’s StrengthsFinder, Creighton Business Ethics Alliance for Youth and UNO’s Service Learning Academy.

Expectations of a mentor:
In the classroom mentors should:

  • Commit to volunteering for a minimum of 1 school year (mentors attend an average of 2 visits , 1.5 hrs each per month awith quarterly outings built in (1.5 hrs each)
  • Team up with P4K program coordinators to guide students through the various curriculum topics

Outside the classroom, matched mentors are asked to:

  • Make weekly contact with a student in the small group – text message, phone call, Facebook, email, etc.
  • Participate in educational or cultural outings with their small group

While more structured than traditional one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring offers stability and the unique opportunity to influence more students through exercises designed to increase meaningful conversation, allow insight into the student’s social life, navigate group dynamics and encourage personal growth.

What mentors can expect from P4K:

  • Support and case management from both program and recruitment staff
  • Ongoing mentor training and development
  • To complete annual surveys offering program feedback and information on your mentoring experience
  • To receive invitations to mixers, trainings and events designed for our mentors
