The Cat House

Being Lincoln's only no-kill cat shelter is a point of pride for volunteers at The Cat House. "The idea of having to put down healthy animals for no good reason other than your time is up or we are out of space -- it just doesn't work for us," said Alma Vlasak, retail coordinator and volunteer for The Cat House. "We wanted something better and this is the result."

The Cat House's primary mission is to take care of the cats they take in and try to find them a home for life. They provide shelter, food, and medical care to all the cats they take in.

In addition to taking care of the cats under their care, they also run an important program in the city of Lincoln -- the trap, neuter, and return (TNR) program.

"The problem with cats in the wild is that there's just too many of them," said Alma Vlasak. "One of the more effective ways we believe is to live trap them, have them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped." The City of Lincoln and animal control see great value in this program because they know if there's a run-in with those cats that they are vaccinated Vlasak said.

Ultimately, like all of our members, this asset could not exist without the volunteers. "It's our gift to the City of Lincoln to have a place like this and without the volunteers it couldn't happen," Vlasak said.
